If You See a Historic Synagogue Rollin’ Down Texas’ Highway 290 …

bnai picLook through the windows at the bimah on which my Dad, Jimmy, and his older brother, Leon, were Bar Mitzvahed in 1945 and 1941, dyc-synagogue-05respectively.  Peer in a little closer, you’ll notice the chuppah under which their parents, Sam & Rosa, were married back in 1925. And if you really strain your neck, you can see all the way back to 1893 when B’nai Abraham was constructed with the help of my great grandfather Joe Levin in Brenham, Texas.

ba plaqueBut after 121 years, Texas’ oldest Orthodox Synagogue and designated historic site is moving, literally, to Austin’s Dell Jewish Community Campus where it will be revitalized to meet the needs of Austin’s expanding Jewish community.
